Oikonomou’s *Grammar of Ancient Greek*, an abridged version of which serves as a school textbook and is part of the exam syllabus for Ancient Greek. In its final form, however, the needs of both students and teachers were taken into account regarding how a grammar textbook could be made more “appealing,” more understandable, more flexible, more systematically organized, and more suitable not only for teaching but also for practicing and reinforcing grammatical concepts. This is also the reason why numerous tables were used—some taken directly as inflectional examples from Oikonomou’s work (such as the declension of λύω – λύομαι), others slightly modified, and still others different or presented in a different order—as well as a variety of other inflectional models, while nothing that is not part of the exam syllabus is included. All grammatical phenomena are accompanied by a wealth of examples, and a special section is devoted to compound verbs and their stress (primarily in the Imperative). Furthermore, for some of these, there are “techniques” for memorization or comprehension (e.g., forming the past participle) that emerged from long-term teaching experience and the need to adapt to—or even mimic—the way the way high school students think and learn.

The second and largest section consists of a comprehensive collection of exercises—a compilation of many years of experience and various types of exercises by Mr. Panagiotis Tzitzikakis. It is well known that theory, when not followed by immediate application, remains merely

a theory without any practical application. It follows, then, that the second part of this book is just as important as the first, because without practical application, there can be no adequate or proper learning. This was, from the outset, the goal: the combination of theory and direct practice.

This grammar book, therefore, includes the following chapters:

Phonemes – Rules of Stress – The Article

Nominative case: all inflected words (nouns, adjectives, adverbs, participles, numerals, pronouns).

Verbal Part: First and Second Conjugations (heavy-stem, contracted, ending in -mi, regular and irregular augment, regular and irregular redoubling, specific exceptions, Second Aorist, passive tenses, irregular verbs).

Workbook: exercises for each grammatical concept, presented in a variety of formats to aid in understanding and mastery.

PAGES: 440

ISBN: 978-618-87167-5-9

This book is the culmination of many years of teaching experience and an effort to help students successfully meet the demands of the “Ancient Greek Grammar” course.
